Lot Essay

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
D. Roberts, British Skeleton Clocks, Woodbridge, 1987, pp. 210, pl. 35, figs. 6/1a, b, c.
The distinctive raised central bell on this fine skeleton clock may be seen on another quarter-chiming example with plaque signed for Smith's of Clerkenwell, sold Christie's London, 6 December 2006, lot 32 (£31,200). That clock also had chapters terminating in coronets, although those on the present clock most closely resemble those on the clock illustrated by Roberts, also sold Christie's London, 22 January 2009, lot 200 (£39,750). The strike/silent and chime selection levers on the present clock are very unusual features, not generally seen. They do not appear on the examples mentioned above, nor does repeat work. See also lot 131 for this feature.
