Lot Essay

Mellis' envelope drawings are usually undated, but were most likely executed in the late 1980s & 1990s. Mellis drew wild flowers gifted to her or collected on walks on an assortment of envlopes of different sizes and colours.

Mellis comments on this series, 'The envelope is as important as the flowers. There are so many different shapes, sizes, textures, patterns and colours of envelope, and the flowers change every day, so each drawing is different even if it is the same lot of flowers. Here is an unending source of inspiration' (A. Lambirth, Margaret Mellis, Farnham, 2010, p. 177).
