A pair of earthenware vases
Meiji period (Late 19th century), Signed Hozan zo
Each of ovoid form with gently rising sides and wide neck, painted over the crackled transparent glaze in polychrome enamels and gold, both vases with two large panels of legendary scenes and a group of Chinese boys viewing a scroll, also with two smaller sub-panels with pheasants, peacocks and other birds, with foliate and brocade borders above and below and with a collar of further brocade and figural designs around the neck; both signed in gilt on base
