A Mother-of-pearl-inlaid Lacquer Box
Joseon dynasty (19th century)
The large rectangular box with close-fitting, overhanging cover and flat base, the lid inlaid in mother-of-pearl with a large rectangular reserve of a hut within a bamboo fence, mountains and grove of bamboo within a border of four corner leaves and slender double-lines, the reserve in turn surrounded by a lotus meander that is repeated on the four sides above a narrow band of wavy lines, the exterior of the lower box inlaid with matching panels of scrolling lotus; the ground overall and wood base brownish black lacquer and the interior of the box lined in yellow paper; applied with flower-form metal shoulder and corner mounts
