Lot Essay

In the Gandharan context, bronzes are comparatively rare and of small size. Generally they are attributed to the later phase and other known examples typically display a characteristic radiating mandorla, see D. Klimburg Salter, The Silk Route and the Diamond Path, 1982, p. 92, pl. 3. The plain treatment of the halo and tightly fitting garment display influence from Gupta period India and would likely place this among the earliest prototypes.
