Lot Essay

A ding and cover of this unusual type, with recumbent buffalos on the cover, but flat-cast bands of ropetwist, dated to the early 5th century BC, from Shanxi Zhangzi county, is illustrated by J. So, Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, 1995, p. 157, fig. 19.2. The author notes, p. 156, that vessels of this "sparsely decorated type" have turned up in excavations in Shanxi and Henan.
