AN INCISED AND GILT-DECORATED BRONZE THREE-PIECE INCENSE SET
17TH/18TH CENTURY
Comprising a compressed bombé-form tripod censer decorated with two cartouches depicting figures in idealized landscapes between lion mask handles, a circular incense powder box and cover, decorated with two figures surrounded by flowering and fruiting trees and birds; and a faceted incense tool vase, each facet decorated with panels enclosing either humans or animals, trees and blossoming plants; together with a pair of silver implements with maker's mark, Xiecheng, and silver mark

Lot Essay

Censers, incense powder boxes and tool vases were referred to as the 'Three Friends of Incense'. Their use is described by H. Moss and G. Tsang in the Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong exhibition catalogue, Arts from the Scholar's Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, nos. 230-232.
