Each circular back centred by paterae within a fluted roundel, above a dished serpentine seat, on fluted tapering square legs, corner brackets to base of back replaced, one lacking

Provenance
Probably acquired by either James Montgomery (1720-1803), for Stobo
Castle, Peeblesshire, or by George Graham (1730-1801) for Kinross
House, Kinross-shire, and by descent.

Lot Essay

Both Gillow and Thomas Chippendale produced designs for similar hall chairs; a Gillow's sketch for a related hall chair is illustrated Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, edited by Lindsay Boynton, Bllomfield, 1995, pl. 286.

An almost identical pair of hall chairs was sold Sotheby's New York, 12 October 1995, lot 287.
