Lot Essay

The approx. knot count is 9H x 11V per sq. cm.

The upper inscription in the cartouche reads: Azareh bandekan husrat-e ashraf Amir Mufakhkham Lutf 'Ali Khan Bakhtiyari Dam Iqbal-e .... . Lutf 'Ali Khan was the son of Imam Quli Khan Bakhtiyari. He was first titled Zafar al-Sultan and then Amir Mufakhkam, the title found here. At first he was a supporter of Muhammad 'Ali Shah during the constitution uprising, but later changed allegiance and joined the pro-Constitutional movement. Under the Constitution, he was made Minister of War and died in 1949. (M. Bamdad, Dictionary of National Biography of Iran, 1700-1900, vol.3, Tehran, 1966, p.181).

The lower inscription in the quatrefoil reads:
Dar karkhane khukan kamreh amal-e Ustad Farajullah Khan 1338 - From the workshop of Khukan Khamreh, the work of the master weaver Farajullah Khan, 1919-20 AD). The date has been altered to read 1238.
