A KUBACHI POTTERY DISH
NORTH IRAN, EARLY 17TH CENTURY
With sloping rim on short foot, the white interior with a central brown-outlined roundel containing a veiled woman wearing a chequered robe and holding in her left hand a single fruit, around her floral sprays, the cavetto plain, the blue rim with oval cartouches, each containing a floral spray, the exterior with single band around foot and rim, intact
13 1/8in. (33.2cm.) diam.

Japanese private collection since 1980s

Specialist note

The young woman represented in this dish, with her chequered dress and veil, closely resembles an example in the Louvre (inv.27780, Istanbul, Isfahan, Delhi. 3 Capitals of Islamic Art. Masterpieces from the Louvre Collection, Istanbul, 2008, no.93, pp.216-217). The figures in both the Louvre dish and ours are depicted carrying a pomegranate in their left hands. The pomegranate is a fruit often depicted because of its numerous symbolic associations. See lot 391 for a short discussion on the pomegranate.
