Of rounded form with slightly flaring lip on conical foot, rim, foot and base of bowl decorated with carved bands of stylised geometric floral petals, body decorated with carved interlacing medallions of scrolling vegetation, interior carved with concentric bands of calligraphy
4¾in. (12cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscriptions around the inside of this bowl, and starting at the top are, Qur'an II, sura al-baqara, v.255. At the centre is the word Muhammad, surrounded by allah mustafa wa murtaza 'ali madad, 'God, Mustafa, and Murtaza 'Ali, assistance!'.
