Lot Essay

This table has a number of features characteristic of Gillows' production of the 1830s, including: the use of goncalo alves veneer (known by Gillows as Albuera wood), a heavily gadrooned top, shaped and chamfered bearers underneath the top, a tapering faceted column with a stepped double band of ovolo moulding, a platform base with escutcheon-shaped ends, and part-gadrooned bun feet. For similar centre tables see folio nos. 4094, 5050, 5051 and 5163 in the firm's Estimate Sketch Books.
