TREASURE TROVE OF RARE RIESLING
A PAUL MANN SELECTION
There are wine lovers and then there are German wine lovers. Though Riesling collectors continue to grow in numbers and volume, our ranks are small compared to the armies of claret drinkers that regularly stack "Best of" lists with various châteaux from 1870, 1945, 1961 and 1982. Yet while the classification chart was still young, it was Riesling that outpaced all wines and was renowned by kings and drinkers all over at the best example of what grapes could do. Those lucky enough to have sampled older bottles of Riesling from top sites and producers have quickly become disciples of the noble grape.
What makes this consignment rarer still is the condition of the bottles. Without very few exceptions, there is nary a sign of seepage or a fill level less than pristine. If you ever wanted to sample a legendary Riesling, this is the collection from which to buy.
The provenance is excellent, as the majority of these bottles were personally selected at the Wet Auctions by the consignor, Paul Mann. In his role of importer, Paul was able to taste directly with producers and selected only the best wines to bring over the US. They have been lovingly stored in his custom home cellar and were removed by Christie's specialists (after a long degustibus with Paul) for this sale.
Paul Mann was born in a German speaking wine village in Hungary, and immigrated in 1965 to the U.S. to work as a tailor with the J.L. Hudson department store in Detroit. One year later, he joined J.L. Hudson's wine department, and by 1970, became the company's wine buyer. In 1975, Paul started a wine wholesale and import business, and is still active today with Imperial Beverage in Michigan.
For more than four decades, Paul Mann has been synonymous in Michigan with fine wines. His tasting skills are legendary, having been honed by over 160 buying trips to Europe and South America since 1968. Paul has been honored by membership in some of the most prestigious wine fraternities in the world, including: The Chevaliers du Tastevin, The Commanderie de Bordeaux and the Cavaliere del "Ordine de Tartufo e die vini di Alba." Additionally, Paul has been awarded with the Order Du Merite Agricole by the French Government.
