Lot Essay

The celebrated Italian tragic actor Ernest Rossi toured Russia in 1877 and 1896. His fans did not include Leo Tolstoy, who recorded (in 'What Is Art?') that Rossi's performance in Hamlet caused him "that peculiar suffering which is caused by false imitations of works of art."
