TWENTY ROMAN HARDSTONE INTAGLIOS
CIRCA 1ST-3RD CENTURY A.D.
Comprising a domed sardonyx example, with hand holding a branch; another with bust of bearded Zeus; another in agate, with standing eagle with spread wings; one in sardonyx, with deity holding thyrsos and vessel; a grey steatite example, with figure standing in barque holding ankh; one in sard, with goddess holding cornucopia and rudder; a cornelian example, with winged panther; another in cornelian, with standing man holding branch and four lotus flowers(?); one in obsidian, with profile bust of Minerva wearing helmet and breast-plate; another in cornelian, with standing goddess and snake-Hygeia; a serpentine example with huntsman; a later cameo ring and intaglio; another in cornelian, with gryllus with conjoined heads of Youth and Old Age; a red jasper intaglio with head of Zeus above standing winged eagle; a cornelian intaglio, with standing goddess holding sceptre; another with Fortuna holding cornucopia and rudder; another with Mercury holding caduceus and money bag; another garnet-coloured magical intaglio with Harpocrates seated on lotus pod, rev. four lines of Greek inscription (20)
