Lot Essay

Known as 'The Father of American Pottery', James Carr is recorded as a medalist at both the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876 and the Paris Universelle Exposition in 1878. M. Karmason with J. Stacke, Majolica, A Complete History and Illustrated Survey, New York, 1989, p. 164-165, remark that no marked pieces are extant with the exception of an experimental overfired daffodil decorated vase. The inscription similar to the present vase, the daffodil vase was also sculpted by H. Lancaster, a worker in Carr's pottery.
