Lot Essay

Of the 140 posters Kauffer designed for the Underground, this rare example released in 1931 best illustrates the influence of Modernism on his work, reflected in the use of bold, geometric shapes. Kauffer broke from the traditional look of London Underground posters by employing a typographic style pioneered by the Bauhaus in Germany.
