Finely carved to one side with a seated sage dressed in long flowing robes below a rocky overhang, to his side a long incised inscription, the reverse with a paulownia tree growing from craggy rocks, the stone of an even pale tone

Lot Essay

The long poem may be translated as:
'Imperial poem
Nine years in meditation could be an eternity;
Mortals only speak of the importance of a persistent mind;
If only they understood that scriptures are there merely to shade the sun;
They would not be studying them with such effort, like trying to pierce through oxhide'.
