Lot Essay

With Vacheron Constantin Certificate of Authenticity dated 21 October 2008 confirming production of the present watch in 1955. The Certificate furthermore states that the present, original Vacheron Constantin black dial was added to a later date.

Reference 6087 is one of Vacheron Constantin's very few chronograph models fitted with a water-resistant case with screw back and rounded chronograph pushers, rendering it a smoother and more subtle design, a look usually rather found in Patek Philippe's celebrated reference 1463.

Doubtlessly one of Vacheron Constantin's most successful designs, it is furthermore distinguished by the dominant, unusually shaped lugs.
Reference 6087 was in production between the mid and late 1950s, according to literature a combined total of only 36 examples of this highly appealing model were made, comprising 26 in yellow gold, eight in pink gold and two in platinum. The watches were fitted with different dial colours and layouts, with and without scales.

It is interesting to note that following reference 6087, Vacheron Constantin did not produce any other chronograph wristwatch until 1989. The combination of rarity, unusual case design, charismatic black dial, very good overall condition and private provenance render this watch a highly attractive collector's timepiece.
