A FRENCH SILVER TABLE CLOCK AND INKSTAND
MARK OF EMILE HUGO, PARIS, CIRCA 1870
In the Renaissance-revival taste, with six paw feet supporting the shaped rectangular base with scrolling openwork border, with four baluster-form vessels for ink and sand surrounding pen trays engraved with scrolling foliage and shells, each vessel cover domed with a putto finial, the stand centering a double-faced clock surrounded by the figures Calliope and Urania, the muses of epic poetry and astronomy, standing on scrolling paw and acanthus feet, the caryatids supporting an oval canopy fitted with a bell, marked under base, each component marked with French export marks for 1840-1879
