CIRCA 1730-35, PROBABLY VAUXHALL, '2' MARKS IN IRON-RED AND BLUE TO INTERIOR OF COVER AND BOWL, IRON-RED STAR MARK TO BASE OF BOWL
Of cylindrical form, the slightly domed cover with double-knop finial, finely painted in iron-red with stylised flowers and insects below a narrow border reserved with panels of demi-flowerheads between diaper and leaf-pattern sections, between blue lines (bowl cracked, chipping to rim of cover with some minor restoration, finial restored)

Lot Essay

Roger Massey discusses the Vauxhall Pottery, established opposite the Spring Gardens in 1683 under the ownership of the Chilwell family until 1756. This distinctive 'pencilled' decoration in iron-red can be seen on domestic wares probably produced at this factory during the 1730-40 period, for similarly Oriental-inspired decoration see, Roger Massey, et al, Ceramics of Vauxhall, 18th Century Pottery and Porcelain, London, 2007, English Ceramic Circle Exhibition Catalogue, pp. 18-25.
