Lot Essay
Several of the figure groups in the present picture are known from paintings by Hendrick Avercamp. The gentleman helping the lady to the right, as well as the skating couple with a stick over the man's shoulder, most likely derived from the painting in the Carter collection in the Los Angeles County Museum (inv. no. L.2005.16.1), whereas the young couple skating in the centre foreground can be seen in the painting in the National Trust for Scotland, Edinburgh. The boy standing to the right warming his hands, the 'tandem' skating couple and the lady with the red and white skirt to the left, are all depicted in the painting in the Harold Samuel collection, The Corporation of London.
The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, houses an almost identical painting, formerly attributed to Esaias van den Velde, that has always been regarded as a copy after Hendrick Avercamp (inv. no. SK-A-802). The latter being the present lot.
We are grateful to Mr. P. Roelofs of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (who was responsible for the Hendrick Avercamp exhibition in The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and The National Gallery of Art, Washington, 2009-2010) for his help in cataloguing this lot (verbal communication, 1 March 2011).
