FDR'S COPY OF RAMSAY'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES. The future president--and life-long bibliophile--acquired this work in 1910. In addition to his ownership signature in each volume he wrote the following note on the front pastedown of vol. 1 in pencil: "F. D. Roosevelt bought Feb. 3, 1910, $4.20." That year saw Roosevelt assume his first elected office, as a member of the New York State Senate. Ramsay was a prolific historian of the early republic. In 1785 he published his two volume History of the Revolution in South Carolina, and in 1789 a two volume History of the American Revolution. He also wrote a biography of Washington and a history of South Carolina before this final, sweeping history of the first two hundred years of European settlement in America, first published in 1816-17.
