oval box, the cover and four side enamelled in opaque sky-blue and engraved with gold taille d'épargne wavy moiré pattern, the cover centred by a circular enamel miniature depicting three ladies within a wooded landscape within a polished gold chased border, the cover opening to reveal a compartment for snuff, the base with a later applied plaque, enamelled in translucent blue on an engine-turned ground with Cupid and an altar of love in white enamel, with the inscription 'Pisez droit', the base opening to reveal a compartment for a musical box, now deficient

Lot Essay

On the base of the snuff-box just below the hinge there is an opening for a key. Presumably at some point the musical movement was removed and the compartment was subsequently re-lined in gold.
