Each of campana form, the entwined stalk handles with leafy terminals, a beaded band at the lower-body, one painted with a gardener and companion taking refreshment, the other with a 'View of Windsor from the Park,' named on the underside, the reverse gilt with either a band of stylized anthemion alternate with flower-heads or scrolling foliate vine

Lot Essay

The shape of the present vases takes its name from the monumental marble excavated in 1771 from Hadrian's Villa in Rome. It was acquired by the noted scholar and collector Sir William Hamilton, restored, and sold to the Earl of Warwick. It is now in the collection of the Glasgow Museum.
