Lot Essay

The present lot depicts the third episode from Shota Rustaveli's (1172-1216) Knight in the panther's skin, which is considered to be the Georgian national epic poem. One day, Avtandil, commander-in-chief of the Arabian army, challenges King Rostevan to a friendly competition to determine who is the better archer. King Rostevan accepts his challenge and they ride across the plain, shooting game for three days. Avtandil emerges the victor.
