Lot Essay

The renowned Russian Orientalist painter Alexandre Roubtzoff was born in St Petersburg and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1912 he was awarded a four year travel scholarship and reached Tunis in April 1914 where he stayed for the remainder of his life painting views of the Maghreb and its people. His works are held in the collections of State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg and the Musée du Petit Palais, Paris.
