Finely decorated in two registers, the upper on one side with two horsemen moving to the right, a lion to the left partially obscured by the handle, a panther to the right below the handle, the other side with a siren facing right between a lion and a seated sphinx, a panther to the right below the handle; the lower register on one side with a goat facing left and a panther facing right, a left-facing goat below the handle to the right, a right-facing panther below the handle to the left, the other side with a left-facing goat between panthers; rays above the foot, a seated panther on each handle-plate, rows of stepped zigzag on the upper surface of the rim; details in added red

Lot Essay

According to Amyx, Corinthian Vase-Painting of the Archaic Period, vol. II, p. 648, the presence of horse-riders likely indicates a horse-racing scene, even without the presence of prizes.
