Château Latour--Vintage 1986
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Vintage note: 1986 has a reputation as producing tough, tannic wines, but here careful work in the vineyard and at the fermenting tanks ensured a wonderful result. The cold winter of '85-'86 was followed by a hot and dry growing season. From the middle of September, there was a fair amount of rain, particularly on the night of the 23rd, but those who waited were rewarded by a fine Indian summer (une belle arrière-saison) in which to complete maturation of the fruit and tannins.
"The 1986 Latour is a massive wine, with dark, almost oily fig and blackberry fruit character on the nose and a Port-like richness with an undercurrent of earth, smoke and sous bois. On the palate the wine is full bodied and tannic, but beginning to show a bit of maturity, softening around the edges and drawing out on the finish. Spectacular." Charles Curtis M. W., June 2010
"...clearly a long haul wine, it had a lovely fruit and flesh. Yet, very tannic in its formative years, it was always a fascinating mouthful. Most recently: very deep, intense and still youthful-looking for a 20-year old wine; crisp fruit, touch of ginger, slightly 'sweaty' tannic nose; good flavour, lively, touch of iron and a bit of a bite."
