Château Latour--Vintage 1970
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
"An immensely impressive wine. Even making allowances for its understandably tannic grip, it refuses to budge. Like 'the Lion King' it visibly proclaims its power and importance. More recently, one can just detect a touch of maturity; its nose is almost impossible to describe because, unlike the Lion King, it hardly shows its head above the parapet. It needs days of decanting time and hours in the glass. Mouth filling, concentrated, still very tannic. Perhaps one of the most bizarre combinations was its accompanying 'Sorgham molasses - roasted elk with sweet potatoes and huckleberry sauce'. Most recently: classic, 'old cedar' bouquet; touch of sweetness, rich, full-bodied, harmonious, masked tannin, dry finish. Many more years in hand." Michael Broadbent M. W., March 2005
"Superbe bouteille. Tendu, frais, minéral, focused, So Latour!" At the estate, Frédéric Engerer, March 2011
"Another revelation, the 1970 Latour was absolutely striking in its exquisitely ripe and unbelievably youthful cassis fruit character, with a soft suggestion of spices and violets at the end, this is really perfect wine. On the palate it is youthful and fresh V the tannins are supple, but still supporting the fruit, the wine is full bodied but not heavy, and there is none of the slightly bitter astringency that some other 70s have shown. If you have any doubts about the 1970 vintage, this bottle will efface them. I have resolved to rush out and by some of this elixir immediately." At the estate, Charles Curtis M. W., March 2011
"Fragrant--very minty. Layered, complex liquorice fruit and freshness that goes on and on. A great wine of great stamina." At the estate, Ch'ng Poh Tiong, March 2011
"Very deep ruby colour. There are cedar, eucalyptus, sweet earth aromas in the intensely rich nose. Full-bodied and very concentrated yet maintaining incredible freshness. A really classy wine for the long haul." At the estate, Paulo Pong, March 2011
