Château Margaux--Vintage 1911
Margaux, 1er cru classé
One with slightly corroded capsules, bin-soiled label, level mid/low-shoulder, good colour, no recent leakage. One with badly bin-soiled label, level low-shoulder, good colour
Tasting note: Six notes. Another charmer though there has been some variation. First tasted in 1976, from a Rothschild cellar, recorked: flowery rim, fragrant; short, dry finish. A year later, same provenance. A fine, deep colour for its age, also fragrant and complete, though seemed more austere. Then two bottles at a tasting in 1985, one with original château capsule and Pillet-Will label, feminine and attractive, the other with a plain capsule, but excellent label overprinted '1911', with a slightly mushroomy nose and touch of decay. A similar looking bottle two years later, pre-sale. Though a fraction too brown and a rich bouquet becoming overblown, it was piquant and very flavoury. Most recently, a delicious bottle, still sweet, rich, with good tannin and acidity. Last noted at the Josey pre-sale tasting in New York, Nov 1999 **** M.B.
