Lot Essay

The distinctively asymmetrical shape of this elegant canapé perhaps indicates it was designed for a particular position in a room, probably to harmonize with the boiserie scheme. It may well have been conceived as a pair, perhaps either side of a fireplace. A pair of canapés supplied by Heurtaut to the Château de la Tour, Normandy, each with only one arm and of curving, asymmetrical from, must have performed a similar function (see B. Pallot, L'Art du Siège Au XVIIIe Siècle en France, Paris, 1987, pp. 246-7).
