Brian Walton, Bishop of Chester, was an outspoken and often controversial clerical figure. He oversaw the publication of the polyglot Bible (1654-57), which was highly regarded in the 17th and 18th centuries; his own copy features in the catalogue as lot 2. This sale catalogue, which bears witness to the intellectual influences on him and wide-ranging nature of his studies, includes a large collection of manuscripts in 'eastern' languages. Munby & Coral, p. 4; Wing (2nd ed.) W-656.
