(Penultimate leaf with small chip at fore-edge, fractional soiling to portrait and title.) Contemporary cream cloth, perhaps a SPECIAL BINDING, covers with outer gilt border, upper cover with central gilt crest of Albert, light-green endpapers, top edge gilt (covers lightly soiled, spine darkened and marked at head, extremities lightly rubbed, front hinge cracked and sometime repaired). Provenance: Queen Victoria (full-page ink presentation inscription dated 14 December 1862, to:) -- Prince Leopold (engraved armorial bookplate).
FINE ASSOCIATION COPY BETWEEN QUEEN VICTORIA AND HER YOUNGEST SON, PRINCE LEOPOLD (1853-1884). Recording a gift when he was nine years old, Victoria's inscription captures her mood of despondency a year after Albert's death, and her increasing protectiveness towards Leopold: 'Read over & over again this picture of the purest, greatest & best of fathers & let the words He spoke & His blessed example ever be your guide -- From your loving & unhappy Mamma'.
