A RARE AND IMPORTANT MAP OF GERMANY IN ITS FIRST STATE. Giolito most likely derived this image of Germany from Heinrich Zell's now lost map of the region made in 1549 or 1550. Its trapezoidal border is reminiscent of the tabulae of printed editions of Ptolemy's Geography. This map proved to be highly influential, and was reprinted in Italy on several occasions in the 16th century. Karrow Mapmakers of the 16th Century (1993) no. 30/70; Ruge Alteres kartographisches Material in deutschen Bibliotheken (1904-16) III, no. 29; Tooley 'Maps in Italian Atlases of the Sixteenth Century' in Imago Mundi (1939) 3, no. 250; watermark similar to Woodward Catalogue of Watermarks in Italian Printed Atlases ca. 1540-1600 (1996) watermark 196.
