WESSING, Koen. Chili, September 1973. Amsterdam: De Bezige Bij, 1973. 4° (248 x 200 mm). 24 black and white photographs, most of these double-page. Original tan wrappers printed in black (some browning as often, long clean tears at the spine fold, light soiling, light wear at the corners, scuff on the front wrapper).
FIRST EDITION of Wessing's powerful document of the Pinochet coup. An 'extremely elegant photobook', each image 'carefully considered, modest and succinct... despite the difficulties of taking photographs in such a tense and difficult situation' (The Photobook). Roland Barthes used images from this work in Camera Lucida to illustrate his discussion of image making. A retrospective of Wessing's work is currently taking place at Santiago's GAM. The Photobook, vol. I, p.229.
