BROOKE, Rupert (1887-1915). Portrait photograph signed ('Rupert Brooke 1906') showing Brooke in costume as the herald in Aeschylus's Eumenides, image 144 x 99mm, mount 150 x 105mm, envelope. Provenance: Roger Senhouse collection (his notes to verso, identified in catalogue excerpt from an unidentified sale).
Senhouse's notes record that Eumenides, presented by the Greek Play Committee, ran for 6 performances at the New Theatre, Cambridge, from 30 November 1906, at the end of Brooke's first term. Brooke's was a non-speaking part: A.C. Benson commented that 'the herald made a pretty figure, spoilt by a glassy stare'.
