GOSSE, Edmund (1849-1928). Autograph manuscript signed ('Edmund Gosse'), 'Old and New', an essay for the New Weekly, [1914], comprising 'some reflections on the movement of letters today as compared with that of forty years ago', 8 pages, 4to (punch holes at upper left)
A generous-spirited response from an admitted 'relic of the mid-Victorian period' to his present 'delightful age, full of movement and ether and force': Gosse considers in particular the literary renaissance of the 1870s which he traces to the circle of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and its struggles with the 'impenetrable dulness' of its audience, and the growth of literature by 'throbs or spasms' to its current healthy state.
