THE MIRACULOUS DRAUGHT OF FISHES, historiated initial 'D' cut from an ILLUMINATED CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM
[Germany, c.1500]120 x 117mm. Christ beckons from the shore to four disciples in a fishing boat, its sail unfurled and surging on rolling waves against a hilly backdrop. Peter climbs over the side of the vessel to join Christ (John 21:1-14) on the morning after the Resurrection. The depiction of a storm, with rain beating down from dark clouds, probably derives from Matthew's account of Peter walking on the water before the Resurrection (Matthew 14:24-32). The scene is framed within staves of pink with scrolls and foliate decoration on a ground of burnished gold. On the verso, a stave in red with text and notation in black (some wear with slight losses of pigment, mainly to areas of green, remnants of mounting on verso).
