[BOLIVAR, Simon (1783-1830)]. A collection of approx 192 documents, 1757-1916 and n.d., the papers of Bolivar's nephew, Fernando, including letters and documents relating to the last months of the life of Simon Bolivar, his estate and heirs, and later correspondence. The collection comprises:
13 letters addressed to Bolivar during the last months of his life, 27 February - 14 December 1830, by correspondents including Tomas Cipriano de Mosquera (9 December), representatives of the Colombian government (10 and 15 October), Vicente Azuero, José Domingo Espinar and others; with a fragment of a document signed by Bolivar, 1 December 1821, a retained copy (imperfect) of a letter by Bolivar to General Rafael Urdaneta, 25 October 1830; and six other manuscripts on political subjects, 1828-1830, probably addressed to Bolivar or copied for his benefit;
a group of 19 documents relating to Bolivar's death, the inventory of his possessions, his business affairs and related matters, including a manuscript description of his last days by Fernando Bolivar (draft, 7¼ pages, 4to), inventories of his possessions (22 December 1830), servants, slaves, pensioners and luggage, and documents relating to his mines at Aroa y Cocorote (7 documents, 1829-32), the movement of his remains (three, 1839, 1842), and other matters;
other letters and documents mostly addressed to Fernando Bolivar, many from correspondents in the USA and Europe, the correspondents including presidents of Venezuela Andres Narvarte and Jose Gregorio Monagas (9), Charlotte Napoléon (two letters of introduction), Carlos Soublette (1838), and family members, with some later documents relating to Bolivar's will and the administration of his estate (including receipts for administrative expenses), his heirs, and the celebration of his centenary;
in two document boxes (a number of the documents suffering from marked acidification or browning); with a deal box, 500 x 255 x 140mm, in which they were preserved by Fernando Bolivar (document signed by him, Caracas, 13 March 1854, indicating that he had owned the box since being sent to a military academy at Germantown in 1822, and inventory of contents, 27 November 1858).
Simon Bolivar had resigned the presidency of Gran Colombia on 27 April 1830, intending to travel to Europe; he died however from tuberculosis at Santa Marta (modern Colombia) on 17 December. Bolivar was particularly close to his nephew Fernando, who features (with his chests of documents) in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel, The General in His Labyrinth.
