GALILEI, Galileo (1564-1642). Opere. Bologna: heirs of Dozza, 1656.
2 volumes, 4° (220 x 162mm). Engraved frontispiece, portrait, one folding plate, woodcut headpieces, initials, illustrations and diagrams. General title at start of each volume, initial blank to vol. II as called for. (Oblong strip cut from head of each flyleaf, some light marginal dampstaining to vol. I, occasional soiling and spotting throughout, some leaves lightly browned in both volumes, V2 in Discorsi dampstained and chipped.) Contemporary calf, spines gilt, morocco lettering-pieces with gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, red edges (head of spine of vol. I worn, old repair to spine of vol. II). Provenance: Comte de Plelo (his ownership inscription in each volume).
FIRST EDITION OF GALILEO'S COLLECTED WORKS, in a fine contemporary binding, edited by Carlo Manolessi and dedicated to Grand Duke Ferdinand II. The Dialogo and the Letter to Christiana, both of which were placed on the Index of Forbidden Books, are excluded. The present copy conforms to the collation of Cinti.
