Lot Essay

The present box and cover appears to be the mirror image of a box of identical size in the National Palace Museum, Taipei which was included in the exhibition, Carving the Subtle Radiance of Lacquers, Taipei, 2008, and illustrated in the Catalogue, p. 126, no. 118. These boxes appear to be from a set of boxes, each with a different scene of immortals in landscapes and an accompanying four-character inscription to the interior of the lid describing the scene on its cover. Other examples in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, were included in the same exhibition, ibid., pp. 126-127, nos. 119-120.
