Lot Essay

The diminutive dimensions of the present vessel suggest that it was made as a curio to be kept in an imperial 'treasure' box such as the example sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2005, lot 1565. Another example of a miniature archaistic jade yi vessel was included by S. Marchant & Son in their 85th anniversary exhibition, Chinese Jades from the Tang to the Qing, p. 170, no. 123.
