The domed surface of the cover delicately carved into layers to depict a naturalistic spray of orchid flowers, inter-weaving with long bladed leaves, the box simiarly carved, the recessed base and interiors with black lacquer

Compare with a carved tiered circular box and cover of very similar design dated to the 15th century in the Tokugawa Art Museum illustrated in Karamono, Imported Lacquerwork - Chinese, Korean and Ryukyuan (Okinawa), Nagoya, Japan, 1997, p. 39, no. 51.
