Lot Essay

The various inlays of this box are made of tinted ivory, tinted bone, coral, mother of pearl, amber, horn, turquoise, malachite, laquer, agate and wood.
This type of decorative technique is known as bai bao qian ('hundred treasures') and is probably originating from the Ming dynasty.
