Lot Essay

The "Doctors' Visit to the Emperor" was the second Pronk commission for the V.O.C., but due to the expense of its production only limited pieces were ordered, in the 1738 and 1739 seasons. Other "Doctors" bottles known have been in the Jarras collection, sold Christie's London 13 June 1990, lot 91; in the C.T. Loo collection, illustrated by M. Beurdeley, p. 178; and another sold in our New York Rooms, 26 January 2006, lot 174.
