Lot Essay

Greenaway executed a number of similar portrait studies of young ladies seated in garden settings, such as The Garden Seat (Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter) in which a girl sits reading on a bench, and Little Miss Prim in which Greenaway's landlady's daughter is illustrated seated with a bowl of red berries.

A watercolour by Greenaway of a young girl standing before a border of nasturtiums that had previously been in the collection of George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, was sold in these Rooms, 3 June 2004, lot 181.
