THE WEDDING BED
When a young woman from Usbekistan entered the marriage market, she was expected to bring with her a dowry of fabulously embroidered bed covers and wall hangings. Known as susanis, which is Persian for 'needle', each cover showed off the patterns and stitches of the bride's home village.
Coverlets, such as these three were made to deck the marriage bed. They let the world and the young husband know that the blushing bride was a superb needlewoman and an asset to the family.
