Gilt-finished three-quarter plate lever movement, diamond endstone, some jewels carried in screwed gold chatons, minute repeating on two gongs activated by a slide in the band, gold cuvette with presentation inscription, white enamel dial, Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds, polished case with monogram to the front lid, dial and movement signed, case stamped with maker's mark AB and with London date letter for 1900, pendant stamped F.T. (Fred Thoms)

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: "PRESENTED BY THOS. & JNO. BROCKELBANK LTD., LIVERPOOL To Captain Kenneth M. Bennett OF THE United States Cruiser "New Orleans" IN RECOGNITION OF HIS CONSPICUOUS SERVICES, AND OF THE GALLANTRY, SEAMANSHIP AND RESOURCE SHOWN BY HIM IN SALVING THE STEAMER "MAHSUD" in Mid-Atlantic during heavy weather. 15TH TO 23RD MARCH 1918."
The USS New Orleans was a British-built protected cruiser completed in March of 1898. The SS Mahsud was a British cargo vessel built by Russell & Co. at port Glasgow. This ship was one of a series named after Pashtun tribal names. The vessel was launched in September of 1917.
