2 volumes, 8o (262 x 172 mm). 35 engraved hand-colored plates (some very pale spotting). Original blue cloth gilt, title and depiction of two dancing anthropomorphic butterflies on upper cover surrounded by border, gilt butterfly on lower cover, spine gilt with two butterflies and title (lightly rubbed, one small tear to upper hinge in volume 2).
FIRST EDITION of this marvellous anthropomorphic work. Plates depict human figures costumed in butterfly wings and placed in a natural setting. Amédée Varin was a draughtsman and painter, and after the publication of this work, he helped prepare the engraved plates for Les Fleurs Animees, the animated flowers of Grandville. This work also contains the music for a song, as well as informational material on the featured insects and butterflies.
